This is one of those family recipes that I have to make at least once a year. I always make it for St. Patrick’s Day. Besides being absolutely delicious, it’s just always great to make a treasured family recipe.
I think of two important women in my life when I make this. Obviously Grandma, of course. She had to really work on writing this down for us, because I don’t think she ever had a recipe for it. She did great, because we’ve been able to make it so successfully for years. I also think of my Italian mother though, because she made it for us all the time. And she and I would make several loaves every year. We had a whole system: she would measure out liquid ingredients and I’d do the dry. I loved that. And I miss them both.
An amusing anecdote: Grandma gave this recipe out, but she’d always leave out the cream of tartar, her secret ingredient! She only ever shared that with my mother.
